Sailor Scouts: A resource Guide

DSC_1885

I managed to get talked into making a Sailor Mercury cosplay with a group of friends, I’m not complaining it was totally on my list for a long time and group cosplays are always fun! Three of us were done for Emerald City Comicon, and the rest were completed for Geek Girl Con 2014!

It was a particularly fun group to work with, we had varying levels of experience. But regardless we did lots of scouring the internet for resources on making said cosplays.  So for all future Sailor Senshi, here you go:

Resources – General

The cosplay.com resource list is a good place to start but has several dead links.

Fuku (or main dress/leotard thing) – the tutorial from sparklepipsi is very very good! I made few tweaks: the skirt stayed flat in the back (not dipping down), I didn’t cut the V out of the skirt in the front (so it was the same length all the way round), the armor was made with just a double layer of lycra (see video below).

Breastplate/armor – I followed this video from Euphoria Luandestil.

Boot covers – excellent tutorial for stretch boot covers.

Tiara – based loosely on this tutorial from Vickie Chau. Instead I used one layer of craft foam and card stock for the upper layer. I also had the upper layer width match the jewel, and just hot glued it straight on.

Wigs

Accessories

Of course none of them can have the same stuff… our group acquired these from combinations of buying on the internet and cobbling together.

  • For the bow balls, these ornaments are the bomb
  • Lots of people also painted shoes to be the right color (this is a nice tutorial)
  • Shapeware (for silly white leotards), I used a moulded cup t-shirt bra, thick dance tights, and these high-waisted control briefs.

Also Luna was a kigarumi/onsie, based on this tutorial!

If you have any questions feel free to post a comment/email/facebook and I will do my best to help! In the name of the moon, good luck!
