I’ve always been interested in the Arthurian Legends, I find stories with differing interpretations and canon interesting, because they are inherently subjective. As a reader I can choose which version I like the most, I can fill the in blanks, make things up and still not really be wrong, because there is no right answer. The Arthurian legends also hit a sweet spot of fantasy that I have enjoyed, knights, witches, dragons, McGuffins, so much fun stuff to play with.
A while back I had an idea on stream to bring on of my silly Middle School story ideas into RPG life, which was an alternative universe where the characters from Arthurian Legends were in fact teenagers in high school. After people didn’t immediately shut this down I started to genuinely consider how I would do it.
I’d never really played Monsterhearts, but from everything I knew about the system it would facilitate the drama and sexual tension that I think is pretty inherent in the Arthurian ledgends. It’s a game about playing confused, and horny teenagers with monstrous abilities, and it seemed like a pretty good fit.
When Roll4It said yes to my bizarre idea I got to work on creating alterations to the skins based off characters from the Legends. I had an absolute blast running New Avalon High for Roll4It, and think we put together a dramatic and compelling story, though there was more politics and less sex than I would have guessed.
I have finally made final versions of the Skins, using the Monster Hearts templates, so if you too want to play an Arthurian AU, have at it!
